How do you get a Gmail account?

How to Get a Gmail Account?

Gmail is an online email service by Google, and its main attractions are no banner advertisements and the huge amount of storage space for email they give you: 2700 MB as of January 28 2005. However, it's still in the beta stage of development (that is, not available to the general public yet), and this means you need to be invited in order to get an account at the moment.

Steps

Since the release of Google Talk, the new Google IM client, Gmail is now open to anyone without the need for an invitation in the US. The catch is, Google will send you the access code to your mobile phone. They do this as a verification process and to reduce spam. If you don't have a mobile phone, proceed to step #4.

If you do have a mobile phone, sign up for an account here. Or you can just send an e-mail to the.llama.llover@gmail.com and he will send youa free invite within 3 days.

Enter your cell phone number and then a code. There will be a link that says, "If you already had a code sent to your cell phone, click here." (You might even find it helpful to click on that link before you enter the things on the previous page, as it has FAQs.) When you get your text message, click there and you will be told to enter your cell number again and to enter the code that you have received on your phone. Now, you have a Gmail account!

Ask a friend or relative or, if you know any, ask a Google employee or other Gmail user for an invitation to Gmail.

Visit http://www.bytetest.com which has given away thousands of free Gmail invitations donated by Gmail users. Bytetest was down, but it is up again. Another good source is the Gmail Invite thread on FatWallet You can also try the discussion page for this article.

If you are a member of a tech-related board, try posting there if you are not new to the site.

Ask for an invitation at the the Gmail news message board or the Spanish language GoogleMania. It appears that people are responding.

Email wikiHow community members and ask for an invite. Some community members who still have invites left include desalvionjr, francohecht, neo.naresh, pro_atthe_game, wjclark6, the.llama.llover, and frioux, all addresses end in @gmail.com, eg: (usernameabove)@gmail.com.

Pay up. If you can't get one for free, consider buying an invitation to Gmail on eBay, (this is for an emergency or if you are desperate, this is not legal!) if you don't know anyone who can invite you to join. Go to eBay and search for "Gmail invite*" and you will find many invitations for sale for about $1 each. It's your choice whether it's worth it or not. (Remember that more than likely, sometime soon it will become a public service and totally free.)

Read the Gmail invitation for instructions on how to sign up. Once you receive your invitation, follow those instructions and you will soon have your Gmail account running.

Tips

Try a couple of the above techniques until you get your Gmail invitation. If you don't see any invites available at the links mentioned in step 5, try again a in a few days.

Each Gmail account owner gets some number of Gmail accounts of 100 invites at a time. Google periodically gives its Gmail Subscribers additional invites, but this is a random occurrence and cannot be counted upon.

Warnings

Many Gmail addresses have already been taken, so the address you want may not be available.

Unfortunately, a standard Google account does not currently allow you to access Gmail, despite the claims on the main page for Google Account.
