What's the best way of backing up your gmail account?

I never delete any emails from gmail, but now as it's growing it's becoming more of a liability for me. I'd like to be able to backup all the emails into one single file like an ".mbox" file from Mozilla Thunderbird.

Is Thunderbird able to go in and download all the emails and backup to an .mbox file? I'd like to have 1 mbox file for every year.

Look into a POP. Try Mozilla Thunder Bird, it's the safest. Yes, You can organize your emails however you choose.
Reply:How is it a liability? Google has everything backed up in triplicate for you.
