How do I get my gmail account as my default email address?

How do I get my computer to notify me immediately, when I recieve emails to my Gmail account? Is this possible?

Go to Gmail settings/forwarding and pop and enable pop downloads. Go to your mail program and set an account to pop.gmail.com. Be sure to set the correct port. It will notify you as it does for other accounts.
